Why We Grow It

Aronia Berry is an excellent choice for food forest systems due to its ecological versatility and the minimal care it requires. It can serve as an understory shrub in larger forest systems or as part of a layered permaculture garden. Its dense growth habit also makes it useful for creating natural borders or wildlife habitats.

How the Plant Grows

Aronia is a suckering bush that sends up new shoots every year. Spring growth gives way to beautiful white flowers that continue through spring. In early fall Berries begin to ripen and will hang on the bush. The leaves turn a brilliant red in late fall.

Additional Info

Great for preserves and juicing. Considered a superfood berry with higher micronutrients than most other berries. Can be a valuable producer in shady settings. We love eating a few fresh for a juicy astringent tang that acts as a digestive aid and pallet cleanser. Though our favourite recipe to use them in is a lacto-fermented hot sauce.

Aronia melanocarpa, commonly known as Aronia Berry or Black Chokeberry, is an easy to grow shrub that you might not know about. Increasingly popular in gardens and food forests for its resilience, bountiful harvest, and health benefits. If you’ve had trouble with blueberries give these a shot instead!
